School Exclusion Information

A school exclusion occurs when a child is kept out of school for either a fixed period of time or permanently for actions or behaviour in breach of the school’s behaviour policy. If you would like to know your school’s behaviour policy, you can ask the school for a copy of its policy document.

Who can exclude your child from school?

Only a head teacher of a maintained school, or the teacher in charge of a pupil referral unit has the powers to exclude a child from school or the unit for fixed period of time or permanently.

How do you know when your child has been excluded from school?

Your child’s school will inform you as soon as possible, when your child has been excluded from school. Similarly, you should receive a letter telling you why your child has been excluded from school, the duration of the exclusion as well as how to challenge the exclusion
